'To Walk on Eggshells' - Review
By her own admission Jean Johnston has written a “short account” of what has been a “long and arduous journey”, caring for her daughter who has suffered from mental health problems. ‘To Walk on Eggshells’ can be read in less than 2 hours. It’s an interesting viewpoint from the carers perspective and especially as it comes through the eyes of a Mother. Unfortunately, Johnston has achieved what she set out not to do and “ diminished the magnitude” of the account being retold. At times the lack of detail or description of events leaves the reader wondering more. Despite this shortcoming, the text raises many important issues about stigma, attitudes and awareness. It’s encouraging to read that both patient and carer are moving on and making sense of things and this small but heartfelt account is well worth a read.
